A section of the north-western city remains in lockdown after the four armed men were seen entering an apartment building this morning.
The men burst into the flat in the Dampoort area of the city, in northern Belgium.
But police say it remains unclear whether the suspects are holding anyone, despite media reports that a man was taken hostage.
